About us

A church by the harbour

Lighthouse started in 1987 in the community hall, with six families and a borrowed piano. Here’s our story, what we believe and who leads us now.

Our story

Why “Lighthouse”?

The church was started by a lightkeeper’s daughter, Margaret, who said a church should do what the old light did: stay on, every night, so people could find their way home.

We met in the community hall for nineteen years. In 2006 we bought the old net loft on Harbour Street, and a lot of people gave up their Saturdays to turn it into a church. You can still see the hooks in the ceiling.

What we believe

What we believe

01

Jesus

He shows us what God is like, and he offers new life to anyone who follows him.

02

The Bible

We read it together every week, and it has the final say on what we believe and how we live.

03

Grace

Nobody earns their way in here. We all came in the same way.

04

Each other

Most of the real church happens in home groups and around kitchen tables.

05

Our town

We clean up, fix up and show up, because Jesus loved us first.

Our team
